SOA's defining principle: pervasive intermediation

Udell: The terminology "services oriented architecture" was grafted onto a first generation of stuff called "web services management." Bottom line: Web services are a given, the "SOA" or "fabric" provides pervasive intermediation, the ability to add policy enforcement, logging, monitoring, fault tolerance, load redistribution, without requiring explicit cooperation of endpoints.
