On a forum today, an artist in Oregon casually mentioned they’d seen a write-up on a fellow artist in New Orleans. As you can imagine, the New Orleans guy nearly broke his arm trying to find out where, when, why and all the other W’s….
Press kits, press releases, and good stories in general sometimes tend to fly much further afield than we could ever guess. This is an excellent example--a writer or editor found Mark's info/story, filed it away for a future story and ran with it a few weeks ago--and Mark DIDN'T EVEN KNOW ABOUT IT!!
This has happened to me on several occasions. A story appeared in a magazine, my work appeared on the cover of a city paper, and an image of my work appeared in someone's column (all properly attributed to me, thankfully!) I only found out because people casually congratulated me on seeing my work in some magazine they’d seen months ago. And I’d had no idea until they told me.
This is not unusual. Writers usually don't go back and alert everyone they use in such an article. So unless Mark has a clipping service (an agency whose job it is to search for such stories & collect them to send to Mark), he'd never know...
If you'd ever like to do a HUGE favor for someone (like me!!) if you EVER see a story written about them, let them know & offer to clip & send it to them if they don't already have a copy. They may have no idea it ran and would be delighted to have a copy of the publicity. (Include the name/contact info and date of the publication and they’ll kiss your feet, I kid you not!)
I am able to sit for longer periods of time--whoohoo!!!
